Kateřina Černá (born 1937), the author of classic oil paintings, original structural assemblages, etchings, and linocuts essentially combined with calligraphic notes and a programmatically naive style, always managed to work successfully on a level of dream and the idealisation of reality while avoiding pathos and kitsch. Following the detailed illustrated monograph published in 2010, readers are now presented with this charming small-format book that Černá compiled between 2002 and 2004 out of drawings made on walks in Tavole in Liguria in Italy, accompanied by brief reminiscences in writing. The title of the little hand-written and hand-bound book – 526 Metres above Sea Level – was thought up by Arsén Pohribný (1928–2012), a long-time admirer of her art who regularly spends the summer months in Tavole. Josef Kroutvor, one of the experts on Kateřina Černá’s unique work, singularly described the book in the context of Czech modern art as follows: ‘It is adorable, endearing, perhaps slightly Chinese, in the spirit of ancient China, flooded with the light of the south and the scents of tropical vegetation.’
